British Embassy Sofia publishes its second Environmental Report (27/10/2009)
The British Embassy in Sofia recently elaborated its second Environmental Report, covering the period from 1 April 2008 to 31 March 2009.
The report summarises our continuous efforts to reduce the environmental impact of the Embassy in line with the British Government’s strategic priority to promote a low carbon, high growth global economy. Our actions are not driven by a desire to be "green" for the sake of it, but by self-interest: if we do not tackle the challenge of climate change now, future generations will pay a heavy price. This message is particularly important now, in the run up to the UN Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen in December 2009.
The British Embassy in Sofia is committed to address the challenges of climate change in its policies and practices. This report shows how we are following up that commitment with action and also shows areas where we need to do better. There has been some encouraging progress - for example an 81% increase in paper recycling, a 26% reduction in water usage, a 13% reduction in electricity and heating and a 26% reduction in fuel consumption. We can still do much better in many areas and we are committed to continued and sustained improvement in our environmental performance.
