If you need a doctor

If you need medical treatment in Bulgaria, you could contact either an English-speaking doctor or you could go to the Hospitals for Active Treatment. All state hospitals should accept EHIC cards for emergency treatment and this will reduce some of your expenses. EHIC cards are not designed to reduce costs for non-emergency medical treatment or procedures. You should ensure that you have adequate travel insurance. You could also choose to go to a private hospital where you would cover all expenses. Early contact with your travel insurance company is advised to ascertain the costs your policy will cover.

If you need to see a doctor you could choose from the enclosed list of English speaking doctors:

For your own safety, please:

• Always make sure that you have full travel insurance. Anyone travelling within the European Economic Area should also get a free European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) which entitles you to some reduced or free emergency care – but you will still need travel insurance. You can apply for an EHIC on-line at www.ehic.org.uk or www.dh.gov.uk/travellers, by phone on 0845 606 2030 or at post offices.

• If you are going to live in Bulgaria, make sure that you register as a resident in Bulgaria and then register with the Bulgarian National Revenue Agency and pay health contributions in Bulgaria. You can then select a GP and register with them. Unless your employer provides a health-care plan, you should consider private health-care plans to cover treatment in Bulgaria in the area in which you live.
